Now that we are all onboard with the Whole Life Challenge and you have gone on your first shopping trip, how about those ingredient labels! Yesterday I found myself reading every piece of food I picked up, looking for that one thing that is banned from the challenge. After I had to return the first few items back to the shelf I wasn’t so sure I was going to make it out with anything I wanted/needed for the week.
A quick break, on one of the not so busy aisles, and some fast reading online I was back at it. No more packaged breakfast sausage, no to the rotisserie chicken, and I wasn’t going to find any help from premade spice mixes. I got two pounds of ground pork along with nine spices, a whole chicken (to be roasted in the oven), and when I got home I looked up a few spice mixes I could pick and choose what to put in. As we embark on these next 8 weeks there are going to be plenty of products where you question if reading the label is worth the time or energy required to make the RIGHT choice, I’m saying YES IT IS. Plan ahead, do your research and ask questions. Check out the forum on the WLC website for help and ideas from your friends taking part in this with you.

You’ve got me worried now! I hope I didn’t miss anything on my ingredient labels!
This is so awesome. I first started reading labels when becoming vegan (13 years ago). When I started thinking about all the ingredients I can’t pronounce, it really inspired me to just stop eating processed foods all together. Hopefully this will have the same effect on all y’all.
I’m going to post some other findings over on the WLC forum, but wanted the rotisserie chicken lovers here to know:
Central Market’s “Traditional” roti chicken ingredients: Chicken (woot!), Salt, Black pepper, Olive oil
They carry other flavors/styles of roti chickens which are NOT WLC compliant, but the Traditional is OK. I still think it is less superior option to roasting / slow-cooking a bird at home, but works in a pinch. FYI – the ones at places like Kroger, Randalls, etc. are NOT WLC compliant.
To follow up on Anthony’s post, I checked the traditional Chicken at Whole Foods. It is compliant, however the only other flavor they had out that day was “tequila….something” I can’t remember but that one was not WLC approved. They have other flavors on certain days, so can’t speak to the others.
Dan, I tried your sausage seasoning combo with Turkey this weekend. You’re right! That was great!
